[In this section I will be explaining things like room rules, dress codes, where you’re allowed and not allowed to hang out, and things like that. Looking at the Punishments section you can probably assume the rules and regulations, but having a list like this makes it easier to understand how constricting it really was there. As NLA is no longer active and their site doesn’t have a list of rules and regulations, I will be going by memory. I was pulled from NLA in Dec. of 2019, so there will be things that are hard to remember. Some of the things on this list can be found in the Documents section.]
Dress Code:
Clothing must not have holes, rips, tears, or shreds
No printed designs of alcohol, tobacco or other drugs
No printed designs of heavy metal, rap, or other inappropriate rock music
No printed designs of negative or depressing images of society
No all black outfits
No “tight” clothing
No see through clothing
No spaghetti straps or tank top shirts.
House Rules:
No talking at the silent table
No talking from My Time onwards (business talk only)
No unnecessary talking in house kitchen
No talking in bedrooms
No hats or hoods inside
No talking during LO’s or Grounding
Get all responsibilities and homework done before fun (No Breaks)
Finish your water on time
Brush your teeth on time
Ask staff to go to bathroom or bedroom
Showers must be 15 mins or less
Participate in prayer
Do not be late for meetings
Go to HHC when asked
Do not talk back
Be polite
Do not question staff’s decisions
Do not draw anything inappropriate
No drawing on yourself/others (Including stickers)
Take jewelry off for PE or tape over ear piercings (max: two weeks after pierced)
Only 2 holes on each lobe for earrings
Only natural hair colors and cuts
Be on time getting out and going to bed
Make cards for students, even your restriction
Stay on approved radio station
Be timely in the bathroom
Put your ipod back in the bucket before you go to bed
No nicknames (Seems romantic)
Do not use bedroom bathrooms
No more than 2 personals (snacks) a day, and only if you brushed your teeth last night, brushed your teeth that morning, drank your water for that portion of the day, finished your meals up until that point, and if you earned your room points.
Recite the medication you take, how much, and what it’s for before taking it
School Rules:
No unnecessary talking/business talk only
Your uniform must be your top layer
No hats or hoods inside
Backpack must contain only necessary materials
Participate in prayer
Participate in PE, or get a PE makeup and an LO (even if you’re injured or sick)
Great Hall Rules:
Be silent when entering
Be silent until the meal starts
Participate in prayer (Hold Hands)
No talking to other tables
Do not put your foot on the bar, “It’s not lady-like”
Start Prayer when it’s your turn (Even if your jewish)
Kitchen Rules:
No unnecessary talking/business talk only
Participate in prayer
Bunny Barn Rules:
No unnecessary talking/business talk only
Bring one person with you unless you have Barn Alone
Do Not Mention:
Old schools
Past bad behaviors
Past friendships that are unhealthy
Past friends that are unhealthy
Past relationships/anything romantic
Alcohol, tobacco, or drugs
Addiction, suicidal ideation, or self-harm related topics
Aokigahara Forest (How tf did they know what that was)
Inappropriate TV shows or movies
No inappropriate jokes
LO’s/Hours/Chores/Deep Cleans:
No unnecessary talking/business talk only
Movie/TV show night Rules:
Movies must be PG (one PG:13 movie/month)
Movie night is mandatory, you must attend
You’re allowed to bring something to do with you during the movie
People must agree on the movie
If someone got “movie pick” from the grab bag (a bag of paper with different privileges on them. You get to pull from the bag if you get more than a certain amount of room points) and it’s NLA appropriate, then that’s what we’re watching (unless a staff member doesn't want to. It doesn’t sound bad, but it’s another example of abuse of power)
One blanket to one person
No hugging, cuddling, or touching
TV shows must be PG
TV night is optional and you may not be allowed to attend depending on your LO’s, Hours, or TF assignments (or if you’re grounded).
You are not allowed to bring something to do during the TV show, you either watch or stay upstairs (silently)
No talking whatsoever. You must be silent during the Movie/show or else you get an LO
Everyone has to wait in line to go back upstairs to the main house. That means staff yell at you if you’re taking “too long”
General Rules:
Only listen to permitted stations, and no personal music unless you have the privilege. Even when you have the privilege, it must follow NLA guidelines; No bad words, and no references to drugs, alcohol, racism, sexism, suicide, self harm, etc…
Some kids didn't know much about the LGBTQ+ when it was brought up, but when it was brought up, no matter how innocent, we were told to drop it.
